Heat resistance hoods protect workers from extreme heat and flames. They cover the worker’s head and neck and leave only the eyes exposed. Heat resistant hoods are typically made of Nomex, it is more durable and flame-resistant than polyester blends and flame-retardant cotton. It also provides some chemical splash protection. The hood also serves as the backup thermal protection provided by the helmet. In the event that helmet becomes dislodged, the firefighter properly wearing the hood would still have a measure of thermal protection in place.
