Introduction To SCBA Hydrostatic Test
Hydrostatic testing is the most common way to check a SCBA cylinder for leaks or flaws. The test involves filling the SCBA cylinder with a liquid, usually water, which maybe dyed to aid in visual lead detection, and pressurization of SCBA cylinder to specified test pressure. Using this test helps maintain safety standards and durability of a SCBA over time. All SCBA cylinder require periodic hydrostatic testing as required by 49 CFR 180.205.
We recommends the below frequency of maintenance :
- Aluminium and steel cylinder should be tested every five years. It has an unlimited life expectancy until they fail a hydro test.
- Fully wrapped fiberglass cylinders should be tested every three years and have a 15-year service life.
- Fully wrapped carbon fiber cylinders should be tested every five years and have a 15-year service life.
- Fully wrapped Kevlar cylinders should be tested every three years and have a 15-year service life.
- Hoop-Wrapped cylinders should be tested every three years and have a 15-year service life.
